Kieran’s notes on SIGCHI 2005 hint at the role of women in CS and jeffe references some articles on the same subject. I hadn’t read Val Hensen’s HOWTO Encourage Women in Linux before; it’s quite good.

And Kieran’s right, there are more women in HCI, although I fear that we’ve pigeon holed them into a discipline that others don’t see as “real” or as “hardcore” computer science.

jeffe’s right, people need to stop being assholes, but it’s more than that. The HOWTO is about encouraging women, which requires an active effort.

This is largely a reminder to myself. I think it’s easier to forget about these things having left academia.
