Sparrow Web

As a follow up to why wiki’s suck, I learned about Sparrow Web recently. It’s like a wiki, but it allows you to edit one item at a time rather than the whole page all at once. An item is a small section of the page like a row in a table or a paragraph or a page heading.

The pages are really ugly, but I think “edit in place” is a lot better than editing a whole page all at once. Given the multitude of open source wikis, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a free version of something like sparrow.

I do like the editing small amounts better, but I think the most important thing is being able to edit quickly and without a new pageload. If I knew more ECMAscript, maybe I could do something like that with lumberjack for editing posts.

Wikipedia sort of lets you edit little sections like that. For example, take a look at the individual edit links for each section of the article on Tiananmen Square.
