hot software

2 pieces of software that I’m sweating:
Firefox Deer Park alpha 2 - Amazingly, Deer Park feels faster than Firefox 1.0.x. I think the main reason is fastback and what appears to be smarter handling of when to render tabs. Still, it has a long way to go so at work I’ve been running two copies of Firefox (1.0.6 and Deer Park alpha 2) until a few more extensions get updated.
“Vipul’s Razor is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network.” It’s been doing an amazingly good job of filtering email spam that normally gets past both bogofilter and spamassassin. It seems pretty unique in how it identifies spam.

Why is it amazing that Deer Park feels faster? I mean, sure, the core developers have a little bit of a reputation for bloating things up, but that’s mostly two or three years in the past. Other than eye candy and security fixes, Firefox 1.0.x’s core (networking, layout, etc.) is going on 15 months old, since the branch for 1.0 was 2004-05-15. I’d expect it to be feeling old and slow.
